Welcome to my home garden!

Imagine Whoa Wilderness gardens like this popping up in parking lots around the world.

Get to know me through my garden work.

Amidst a micro-forest is a "Stone Throne" built from an assortment of field stones including large flat irregular shape stones for the seat and smooth pillow shaped river stones for arm rests. Not pictured here is a built-in fire pit behind its stone backrest which, provides its warmth. A rock dust base acts as a heat sink which extents its therapeutic effect. The "Stone Throne” keeps the royal buns toasty even in winter.

The Stone Throne, Ruler Worthy

In the Mid-Hudson Valley landscape design I built “The Stone Throne” to keep the royal buns toasty even in winter. Not pictured here is a built-in fire pit behind its stone backrest which, provides its warmth. A rock dust base acts as a heat sink which extents its therapeutic effect.

A Micro-Forest with “Out-of-Bounds” Waterfall Splash

This element of a micro-forest has a “out-of-bounds” waterfall splash from an 11 foot high logjam waterfall. Fed from a bubbling spring up at grade, water flows and falls down multiple sculpted levels in streams and ponds. Water courses over and through dramatically placed driftwood and seemingly into a deep cave. All suggesting to the eye and mind a much grander space.

An 11 foot high logjam waterfall is fed from a spring bubbling up at grade, in the southeast corner of a 60 by 40 foot suburban garden space. Water flows and falls down multiple sculpted levels in streams and ponds. Water courses over and through dramatically placed driftwood and seemingly into a deep cave. All suggesting to the eye and mind a much grander space.

The lowest stone deck in this landscape design is at the base of the falls holds a fire pit, seating and a hot tub. South facing glass sliders offer private access to the home’s sun baked “basement” lower level.

Established in 1996.

Stone Stairway to Swimming Hole Heaven

Stones steps leading to a swimming hole at its base is designed to be part of the natural landscape blending with the temptation of water to create an alluring hideaway in this landscape design.

A Thirty Six Foot Long Log Bridge

A closeup of a babbling brook with a thirty six foot long log bridge in the background. Engineered with parallams faced with pine slabs, this bridge is a key element in this landscape design. One can imagine King Kong ripped apart a tree and placed it there for Fay Wray to safely cross the turbulent stream.

In the background of this photo lies a foot bridge I designed and built with engineered parallams faced with pine slabs.

This landscape design makes it look as though King Kong ripped apart a tree and placed it there for Fay Wray to safely cross the turbulent stream.

Rock Cut Basins

Rock cut basin sculptures inspired by nature adorns the garden in my fundamental landscape design approach. The power of nature is reflected in the swirling waters that can shape even the most jagged stones, resulting in rocks that are smooth to the touch and pleasing to the eye. Pictured here is a stone sphere resting in a rainwater filled crescent shaped stone basin.

These sculptures adorn my gardens to reflect the power of nature and how its swirling waters can spin and shape even the most jagged stones, resulting in rocks that are smooth to the touch and pleasing to the eye throughout my fundamental landscape design approach.

Details in Motion

A closeup of a path made from broad irregular shaped stepping stones grouted with small narrow vertical stones that generate a sense of flow even while remaining in place.
These details in motion create a sense of natural movement which can be calming and bring a feeling of familiarity and novelty to our reality.
In my landscape designs, I create that effect in as many ways as possible.

Here small stones generate a sense of flow even while remaining in place.

🔹🔹🔹

Sculpted Swimming Holes

Side by side swimming holes surrounded by snow and ice. Water flows from the higher to the low creating a waterfall and enhancing this transcendent micro-forest setting. This all takes place due to intuitive landscape design.

Even in winter the beauty of these swimming holes relaxes the mind and body.

The shape in this landscape design makes for a peaceful place to cool down in summer and forms intriguing ice circles in winter.

Floating Stone Paths

Cantilevered stone ledges with driftwood accents create a floating path with darkened spaces below and lite by periodic lanterns above for your unconscious mind to wonder, where does this lead to?

“Micron Canyon” Faraway at Home

Michael Uhl seated on a ledge overlooking “Micron Canyon” created at a home as part of his micro-forest landscape design. This wooded stone sanctuary looks as though its been there for ages rather than being man-made.

My landscape design looks as if it developed there on its own, eons ago, not man-made. Paradise has the grand plan feel of succession baked right in.

🔹🔹🔹

Rock Loveseat

A rock loveseat is carved into the hillside to admire the surrounding scenery. It's comprised of a large flat irregular field stone as the base of the seat and carefully placed locally sourced boulders create the arms and back rest.

Tucked away in the landscape design is a special perch carved into the hillside, from which to admire the surrounding scenery.

Driftwood Comes Alive Here

This landscape design of a dry laid Penn stone retaining wall intertwines branches purposely resting among the mossy driftwood and plant-filled surroundings to establish and validate the garden's growth cycles: storm to storm, season to season, and year to year.

Log Flumes in the Flow

Water forks in many directions as it coats this green mossy faced log flume created from a hollowed out fallen tree limb as shown in this landscape designed element of a micro-forest.

Manicured Less Forest-Floors

Choose your path between the pine needles that layer to create a soft forest floor in this landscape design where squirrels form cone shapes searching for their acorns.

Enjoying the Company of a Queen Bee’s Hive

Placing a honey bee hive in this landscape design in a secure and safe spot in the garden creates a royal, lofty presence that enhances the connections to nature; especially when we leave the honey for the hard working bees who created it.

🔹🔹🔹

Primitive Awareness

This landscape design element features naturally smooth stones tightly wrapped in copper wire. These balanced sculptures pay homage to a primitive awareness and the balance of nature.

No Slings or Arrows

A black bear cutout rests against a vertical slat wooden fence. Its stare is focused on an artistic collection of smooth river stones. Once an archery target this cutout has been transformed into art to represent the souls of the wild to stir our emotional connection to abundant wildlife.

Targets transformed by art to represent the souls of the wild pictured here in these garden photos.

Passive Garden Cottage

Pictured in these garden photos is my scale model of a lightweight, portable, solar and battery powered paradise cottage.

It’s perched in the garden to provide a place for viewing and relaxing as well as safe overnights. There one’s mind is free to meld with nature, blanketed by the cool evening breeze.

This project encompasses years of research and design. I have attended the Passive House USA Expo in Portland, Oregon, and trained, as a sit-in, in New York City. There I developed contacts with experts who can provide technical support for future builds. I am also closely following Tesla’s development of solar collecting shingles and Powerwall, and look forward to using them on a project soon.
